The Dining Hall

A sumptuous lunch in solitude

No expense was spared when Christian VI set his mind to the task of decorating the heart of the Hermitage – the dining hall. The style is Austrian-inspired Baroque with marble – both the real thing and the elaborately hand-painted. The stucco ceiling has inlaid mirrors and gilding with real gold leaf. In various places, the decorators laid silver under the paint to give a shine to features such as a green olive branch.  The room was designed to dazzle, and it still does after an elaborate restoration project which was completed in 2013.
